Shrek, Area 51 Writer to Pen Alien Zoo

SHREK, SHREK 2 and the upcoming AREA 51 writer Joe Stillman has been hired by Warner Bros. to script ALIEN ZOO, a live action-CGI hybrid, according to VARIETY.

WB and Unique Features partners Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne are producing with Dylan Sellers. The family comedy concept, from Sellers, is said to be JURASSIC PARK with aliens.

AREA 51, with Dwayne Johnson as a lead voice, will be released by Sony this fall. Stillman also wrote GULLIVER'S TRAVELS with Jack Black and PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF to be directed by Chris Columbus.

MANDVI, TOUB AND CURTIS TO JOIN THE LAST AIRBENDER.Aasif Mandvi, Shaun Toub and Cliff Curtis have joined the cast of M.Night Shyamalan's THE LAST AIRBENDER for Paramount Pictures andNickelodeon Movies. Shyamalan, Sam Mercer and Frank Marshall areproducing with principal photography to begin mid-March 2009. The casting of THE LAST AIRBENDER has come under significant scrutiny,as Caucasian actors were hired in initially for the main characters, whoin the animated series are of Asian descent and culture. They join a cast headed by Noah Ringer, who plays the title role, NicolaPeltz, who plays the Waterbender Katara, Jackson Rathbone, in the roleof Katara's brother Sokka, and Dev Patel, who plays Prince Zuko, princeof the Fire Nation. Mandvi, who was born in India, is set to play the role of CommanderZhao, an ambitious and hot-tempered Fire Nation commander. A regularcorrespondent on Comedy Central's hit show, THE DAILY SHOW, Mandvi isrepped by Endeavor and Lillian LaSalle at Sweet 180 Management. He willnext be seen opposite Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in Disney's THEPROPOSAL, and recently wrapped production on 7 TO THE PALACE, hisfeature co-writing debut in which he also stars. Iranian-born Toub, last seen in IRON MAN and THE KITE RUNNER, is cast asUncle Iroh, the retired Fire Nation general and devoted surrogate parentto Dev Patel's character Zuko. He is represented by Abrams ArtistsAgency. Curtis, of New Zealand Maori descent, is set to play the ruthless rulerFire Lord Ozai. Represented by Abrams Artists Agency, he most recentlyappeared in CROSSING OVER with Harrison Ford and will next appear in theParamount film A THOUSAND WORDS with Eddie Murphy.

ImageMovers and Disney are in negotiations to pick up film rights to "The Stoneheart Trilogy," a young-adult fantasy book series by Charlie Fletcher. ImageMovers' Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey will produce.

The books revolve around a 12-year-old London boy who enters a hidden alternate world where statues, imbued with the soullike essence of their makers, come to life. The boy's presence upsets a balance between good and evil, and while dealing with such creatures as sphinxes and gargoyles, he teams with an orphan girl and the statue of a World War I gunner to try to set things right.

The third "Stoneheart" book, "Silvertongue," is due in stores next month.

Fox Atomic has inked a deal with indie vidgame developer Zombie Studios and production shingle Union Entertainment to develop Zombie's original action property "Blacklight" as a feature film, comicbook series and vidgame.

Blacklight is described as a covert military action story set 25 years in the future.
 
Sky Runners

Production has begun on Skyrunners, the first original TV movie for Disney XD. 

A science fiction adventure starring Kelly Blatz (Aaron Stone) and newcomer Joey Pollari, Skyrunners will feature alien creature effects designed and created by Weta Workshop (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia). 

The story revolves around two teen brothers that commandeer a UFO that crashes near their town and uncover an evil alien plot to take over Earth. 

A production of Ranger Productions and Shaftesbury Services II, Inc., Skyrunners is directed by Ralph Hemecker (Numb3rs) and written by Richard C. Okie (Quantum Leap, Earth: Final Conflict) along with Adam Wilson & Melanie Wilson.

Okie also serves as executive-producer of the movie.
 
I, Frankenstein

Frankenstein P.I. 

– Director Patrick Tatopoulos, "Underworld" co-creator Kevin Grevioux and Death Ray Films are teaming to bring the comic book "I, Frankenstein" to the big screen.

"I, Frankenstein" is an upcoming Darkstorm Comic written by Grevioux that brings together classic monster characters, including Frankenstein's Monster, the Invisible Man, Dracula and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, in a contemporary film noir setting.

The Monster, for example, who has evolved and learned how to control his anger, is now a private investigator.

Dracula, meanwhile, is a kingpin of crime, and the Invisible Man is a secret operative.

Grevioux will write the adaptation and act as a producer. Tatopoulos, a longtime creature designer for such films as "I Am Legend" and "Godzilla" who made his directorial debut with "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," will helm.
